This is part three of the article series and deals with the paid inclusion and organic search results from search engines.
We touched on the topic of Kibitzing in the last part, now we will deal with some of the new concepts in search engine submission namely Paid Inclusion and Sponsored Results. Web sites have evolved from being perspective generators into something more commercial. The knowledge warehouses have finally figured out means to generate revenue for the knowledge service they render through multiple mechanisms. Similarly the search engines have evolved from just being the intelligent bots capable of indexing; organizing and serving relevant content pages to “SEusers”. Now there is one more new term to get familiarized with, like Caesars now we got the Search Engine Users abbreviated into “seusers” (pronounced: SEW-sirs). Search Engines have figured out that there are many websites who want to sell products to the Internet World. For each of the search terms you type in along with the highly relevant websites selected by the highly sophisticated search Algorithms (Search Algs for short), you get sponsored results.
Webmasters have understood who the masters of the Internet Universe are and have started to recognize the importance of being in the top 20 of the search results. This coveted top spot for various search engines is what makes are breaks web business today. By being in the top 20 they get tons of free traffic to their website and which results in sales and translated into revenue. For folks who lie low in the SERPs (Search Engine Result Pages), there is one more mechanism to “BUMP UP” their standing and visibility in the SE. Welcome to the world of sponsored results, webmasters buy or bid for higher spots usually in the top bar or side bars of the search results. In some search engines the sponsored results get almost half the SERP. This is known as the sponsored results, as they pay for the impression of the ads shown when seusers type in their search terms. There are two types namely pay for impression similar to the banner advertisement techniques and the next is the currently popular Pay per clicks. Where the SE charges the webmasters for each click they generate for the sponsored results. This is a great business model.
The search engines organize the web pages in ways where by the retrieval based on search terms is easy. The serving of results is based on search terms hence the indexing is based on the search terms. The search engines also give weightage for web pages with worthy back links. The search results returned for each keyword or phrase is based on the content, optimization, back links and outbound links. There are multiple other proprietary techniques employed by each SE to return the best results for the search terms. These are termed are termed as the organic search results as they are not paid for the top spot. The side bar and specially designated zones contain the paid listings. Reaching the top spot in the organic results is what every webmaster is after at currently. Because of the sheer number of websites that are out there the search engines don’t want to spend more cycles in their bots for any new websites. They have figured out that there is tons of information on current websites and any new indexing without any payment is not worth it unless proven to be useful. Some websites have gotten to the model of indexing only websites that pay to be indexed and returned in the search results. This is known as paid inclusion. The other way to get included in these search engines are by applying for human edited web categories like the DMOZ.

Click on the Google Image and you get the search results for “2006 World Football.”
I admire those images. Like at the time of the Olympic Games, everyday another picture showing the center of the Games; one day water polo, athletics, hockey, short track … “Although,” — you might think — “we are a virtual company, when there are games, we are there too; right by your side.” Google was right there. And now again, The World Cup. Again the image shows: ” we are with you.”
But then the opening game itself. Germany (4) – Costa Rica (2). You may have seen it. And you may have seen the advertisements as well. If you have observed the advertisements you recall one company that had a particular presence.
Amongst the “normal” advertisers we found:
- Philips, Braun, McDonald’s, Coca Cola, Avaya, Continental, Toshiba, FIFA WorldCup itself, Fujifilm, Hyundai, Adidas, Mastercard, T-Com, and maybe I’ve missed one (or two…).
Now which company was also present amongst those earthly giants?
The only Virtual Company that was present, was the very – YAHOO!
For about two hours, an audience of millions of people turned their back to their PC’s and notebooks and switched on the television. Prime time advertisement. And Yahoo was there, playing the marketing game. In the lead.
Despite Googles’ beautiful picture, I think this marketing move was won by its’ opponent. First half: Google (0) – Yahoo (1).

Trillions of Billions of content pages make up the wide world of Internet. Keeping a house clean and arranged with proper placement for each household item is so big a task for each of us that it is a much despised daily chore. Ever wonder who or what keeps the Internet clean organized and keep them in arms length for you when you need it? This humongous task of making sure the right set of data is kept organized and delivered as information to the right folks when they need it are done by the Search Engines (SE). There are many popular search engines that deliver search results for countless number of searches every Nano-second. The Internet is the first place folks go for obtaining any type of information. The Internet has become the knowledge warehouse of what the world knows. Well almost true. If you have not discovered the full potential of the search engines it is not too late.
Coming to think about the knowledge we are “allowed” to acquire in our early formative years, it has been so narrow don’t you think. You have been taught what is right and with knowledge that is so “Local”. Different perspectives to the same problem are what has created this great species that is ruling this earth and in some time soon the universe. The internet is the place to go to understand and know about the different perspectives and learn a lot more that is “Global” for “Free”. Internet is the best medium for free speech and nothing comes close to it. With freedom comes responsibility and with freedom comes the power of choice. It is said with experience that when toddlers are told not to grab a light bulb, they never listen. When the hold it once and feel the misery of the heat they never again reach for them again. Some of these kids may go ahead and create light bulbs that are cold for touch but does the same functionality in the future. Man is a kid at various stages of life on various aspects of life and knowledge domains. Internet provides a means to acquire knowledge freely and based on bad choices they may get burnt but they may find a good alternative or something more useful to our human race.
The topic title and the content till now seem to be a mismatch and I see you smile at reading this line. Let me do the correlation real quick to get you back on the topic. Search engines are the masters of the Internet world. When someone wants to acquire information on a topic the search results is what defines what the person gets to learn. This is similar to the localization concept I mentioned earlier. What is troubling me is the popularity of a few search engines, I equate them to the perspectives that we are boxed into. Your knowledge expansion really depends on what is available as the top 20 results in the search engines. Getting to learn the same perspective as anybody else doesn’t gain you much in the long term. There is reason behind each person’s existence – to make a positive difference. Unless you are exposed to the multiple perspectives and vast knowledge out there that needs your help to make things a little better there remains a task undone. We will see a little bit more about what concepts have taken the job of rescue mission from a boxed in Internet world in the next part. Meanwhile you can search using the search engine in the resource box to get a different set of results for a different perspective.
